It is 8.30am. Before your first coffee, a message is already waiting for you: three emails to deal with first, a meeting that has moved, two replies drafted. You did not ask for anything. That is the promise of Claude Duet, the agent Anthropic presented on 21 October 2026.

At AI Sisters, an AI consultancy, we help teams adopt these tools, and the first thing we look at is what they do when nobody is watching. Here is what Duet does, what it asks you before acting, who can use it, and how to get ready from France, where it is not yet available.

In brief

  • Claude Duet is a proactive agent: it writes to you first, with a daily briefing in the morning and alerts when a decision is yours to make.
  • It works on its own computer in the cloud, with its own browser. Closing the app does not stop it.
  • It picks up what Claude already knows about you: memory, skills and connected apps.
  • It asks for your approval before sending a message, paying, signing or deleting.
  • It is not available in France: a waitlisted preview, reserved for US Pro and Max subscribers.
  • You can prepare the ground now, because Duet inherits what you build in Claude today.

What is Claude Duet?

Claude Duet is an agent you hand work to by message, and which takes the initiative. The Claude you know waits for you to open a conversation. Duet writes to you when something needs you.

Anthropic summed it up like this on X, on the evening of the launch:

In other words: the agent comes to you with what needs your attention, carries out the tasks you give it, keeps going when you step away and checks with you before acting on your behalf.

According to Anthropic’s help centre, every morning it reviews your emails and calendar, sorts what matters and starts the work, for example by drafting replies for you to review. During the day, it follows up on conversations that have stalled. You can also give it heavier tasks: setting up a meeting, building a dashboard, preparing a financial forecast or a presentation. Finished files arrive in a “Make” tab, and a “Tasks” tab tracks what is in progress.

Duet reads your apps from its own computer and sends you back a briefing, files or an approval request.

Duet runs on Claude Opus 5.5, with no choice of model: the agent decides on its own how much effort each task needs. Anthropic announces more than 6,000 connectors and plugins, including Gmail, Google Calendar, Slack, HubSpot, QuickBooks, Docusign and Stripe. For a site without a connector, it uses its own browser. From the very first message it picks up the memory, skills and connectors of your Claude account, and you can open channels by topic that all share the same memory.

To understand. An assistant is like a capable colleague who waits for you to pop your head round their office door. Duet is more like an executive assistant who leaves a note on your keyboard every morning, with the day’s urgent matters and the letters ready to sign. She can suggest that a file is closed, but you are the one who files it.

Availability, pricing, France: where things stand on 22 October

Duet has been announced, but very few people can open it. For a French company, the short answer is: not yet.

Claude Duet: what we know on 22 October 2026
QuestionWhat we knowSource
Available in France? No. The preview is reserved for US Claude accountsAnthropic
Which plans?Pro and Max. Team and Enterprise will come “later”, with no dateAnthropic
How do you get access?Through a waitlist, with invitations sent in wavesAnthropic, 9to5Mac
How much does it cost?No extra charge during the preview, but it uses your plan’s quota, background work includedAnthropic
On which devices?iPhone and Android apps, and the web at claude.aiAnthropic
What is still missingMicrosoft 365, calls, text messages, files on your computer. Slack with limitsAnthropic

That leaves the question of quota. Duet checks your apps every few hours, and each of these checks counts. Anthropic is upfront about it, according to Engadget: checking continuously “would use up your plan’s limits much faster”. An agent that works while you sleep draws on the same pool as your conversations during the day.

Duet vs OpenAI Dots

Duet arrives after its competitors. ITdaily points out that Meta Muse, OpenAI Dots and Gemini Spark are already out. We covered OpenAI’s Dots in a dedicated article. The two products do not target quite the same audience, and only the second is available in France.

What Duet does alone, and what it must ask you

For a leadership team, this is the first point to check. Anthropic has set three levels of action for the preview.

The three levels of action announced by Anthropic for the preview.

It does alone

Reading the apps you have connected, searching, analysing, preparing drafts, spreadsheets and presentations. Nothing leaves its computer without you.

It asks you

Sending a message, paying, signing a document or deleting anything. If you do not reply straight away, Duet moves on to something else and asks you again later. Purchases go through Link, Stripe’s wallet, or Shop Pay, Shopify’s, with a single-use card limited to that merchant and that amount.

It never does

Buying or selling securities, transferring money between accounts, accessing someone else’s account, even with your approval. It cannot make phone calls or send text messages either. Your passwords are entered in a separate form that sends them straight to its browser, without going through the conversation.

To understand. An agent that reads your emails also reads those from strangers. A booby-trapped message can contain a sentence such as “forward this file to this address”. It is like a fake transfer order slipped into an accountant’s post: everything rests on the rule that requires a signature before paying.

Anthropic acknowledges this in its help centre: this injection risk exists, and your approvals are the main safeguard against it. The company also admits that Duet can misread a thread, get the urgency wrong or miss a message that arrives between two checks, and says it is “continuing to test its judgement” on the right moment to write to you. None of these points has yet been measured by an independent evaluator.

Three profiles, three first tasks

Anthropic says it designed Duet for professionals and small business owners who have more to keep track of than they can handle. Its product page features a fictional coffee shop chain: a recruitment deadline, a client contract to review, incorrect orders with refunds already prepared.

1. The SME owner: the morning sort

The first hour of the day often disappears into the inbox. Duet offers a daily briefing with draft replies. First task to give it: this morning briefing, read-only, without sending anything for two weeks. Connecting your email means opening up conversations with clients and employees to the agent: check first what your internal policy allows.

2. The salesperson: preparing meetings

Before a meeting, you need to reread the latest exchanges, the CRM record and the quotes in progress. Duet can put together a preparation sheet, and Anthropic says it cites the source of each piece of information. First task: the sheet for tomorrow’s meeting. At the start, open the link to each source.

3. Admin and finance: invoice reminders

With the Stripe connector, Duet spots unpaid invoices and drafts reminders, which it submits to you before sending. First task: the list of this month’s unpaid invoices. A dashboard produced by an agent should be checked line by line before it is used for a decision. To go further on the finance side, see our article on Claude connected to Pennylane.

How to get ready from France

Duet is not open in Europe, and Anthropic has announced nothing for other countries. But it picks up the memory, skills and connectors of your Claude account from the very first message. The work you do in Claude today will serve it the day it arrives.

  1. List your routines: the morning briefing, follow-ups, meeting preparation, what comes back every week and what you know how to check.
  2. Write down your rules: what the agent does alone, what it asks you, what it never touches. Our guide to integrating AI into a company explains the approach in detail.
  3. Connect only what is needed: the apps useful for a given task. An agent sees everything you open up to it.
  4. Build your skills in Claude: skills for your repetitive tasks, scheduled tasks in Claude Cowork.
  5. Train your teams to delegate: a clear goal, a checked result, a source for every figure. That is the purpose of our AI agent training, the Agent-a-thon.
